What It's Like To Drive A Suzuki Jimny Every Day
20th Mar. 2026 12 minute read

If you’re considering a daily driver that’s a bit different, the Suzuki Jimny often comes up in conversation. So, what it’s like to drive a Suzuki Jimny every day? At The Jimny Co, we import Jimnys for customers across Ireland every week, and one of the most common questions we hear is simple:
The Jimny has been loved by customers around the world since the birth of its first model in 1970. Its rugged charm and unique style have made it a popular choice for both urban and off-road driving, contributing to its global appeal.
“Is the Jimny actually good to live with every day?”
The short answer: yes — if you understand what it’s built for. And in many ways, it suits Irish roads better than you might expect.
A Brief History: From First Generation to the New Jimny
The Suzuki Jimny has been an off-road icon since the first generation Jimny debuted in 1970. Originally introduced as the LJ10, it featured a compact design and a 359-cc, air-cooled, two-stroke engine, setting the foundation for a lightweight, rugged 4x4.
The Jimny was originally developed by the Hope Motor Company of Japan in 1967, which Suzuki later acquired.
All four generations of the Jimny have featured a robust ladder frame construction, with the design evolving over time while retaining key characteristics such as a separate body and frame and solid-beam axles. The second generation arrived in 1981, boasting a solid-square shape and a more spacious interior, which helped it gain popularity worldwide. The third generation, launched in 1998, introduced a more aerodynamic design that improved how air flows around the vehicle at higher speeds, enhancing efficiency and performance. This generation also featured a distinctive front grille, with Suzuki creating a look that balanced familiarity and uniqueness, while blending off-road capability with everyday usability.
The new Jimny launched in late 2018 continues this legacy with modern features, a powerful 1.5-litre engine, and a design that pays homage to its heritage, including a bold grille as a key visual element. Suzuki has marketed 2.85 million units of the Jimny in 194 countries through September 2018, demonstrating strong jimny sales and global appeal.
Why the Suzuki Jimny Works Surprisingly Well as a Daily Driver
On paper, the Jimny is a proper off-roader — featuring a rugged ladder frame chassis, solid front and rear axles, and a part-time four-wheel drive system with low range transfer gear.
But in reality, it’s also small, simple, and incredibly practical, especially in places like Dublin where parking and tight streets are part of daily life.
In our experience importing and preparing Jimnys for Irish drivers, owners quickly realise a few things:
It’s easy to park anywhere thanks to its compact size and lightweight body.
It handles poor road surfaces brilliantly, thanks to its high ground clearance and excellent approach angle (37 degrees), ramp breakover angle (28 degrees), and departure angle (49 degrees).
It feels rugged and dependable in Irish weather, supported by features like hill descent control and traction control for slippery surfaces such as mud, snow, and wet roads.
The Jimny’s high seating position and large windows offer superb visibility for the driver, while the flat clamshell bonnet further enhances visibility and control, especially during off-road driving. Its short wheelbase and compact dimensions provide excellent maneuverability for parking in tight urban streets.
When it comes to practicality, the Jimny comes well equipped for both urban and off-road use, making it easy to pack your gear and explore new adventures with confidence.
And on narrow backroads around Wicklow or the Dublin Mountains, it honestly feels perfectly at home.
Driving a Jimny Around Dublin
City driving is where the Jimny surprises people most.
The Suzuki Jimny is a kei-style 4x4 known for its charm and reliability, making it ideal for urban driving.
Dublin traffic can be frustrating, but the Jimny’s compact size and upright visibility from its elevated steering wheel position make life much easier.
You sit high, you can see everything, and squeezing into tight parking spaces around Ranelagh, Dundrum, or the city centre becomes simple.
Because it’s narrow, it also works brilliantly on:
older Irish streets
tight housing estates
multi-storey car parks
The Jimny is available with a manual gearbox, which many drivers find engaging and well-suited for city conditions.
Many of our customers moving from large SUVs actually say the Jimny feels far less stressful to drive in the city.
Handling Irish Roads and Weather: Built for the Tough Stuff
Irish roads aren’t always kind to cars.
Between potholes, uneven surfaces, and constant rain, many vehicles struggle. The Jimny, however, was built for much tougher terrain. The Suzuki Jimny features a 1.5-litre engine that generates strong torque throughout a wide RPM range, providing the power needed for impressive off-road performance.
Thanks to its ladder frame chassis and 3-link rigid axle suspension with coil springs, it handles:
rough rural roads
muddy tracks
flooded backroads
winter conditions with snow and ice
The Jimny also features optimized bumpers that increase clearance at the wheels, allowing for assured climbing over obstacles.
During heavy rain or icy mornings, the AllGrip Pro 4WD system provides extra reassurance by distributing torque efficiently and improving traction on slippery surfaces.
For added safety and control, the Jimny is equipped with a brake LSD traction control system that automatically redistributes torque to wheels with grip when two wheels lose traction. Drivers can push a button to activate features like Hill Descent Control, which assists with braking on steep slopes by automatically engaging the brakes, making challenging descents safer and easier.
The Jimny is also equipped with Suzuki Safety Support features, including lane departure warning, high beam assist, and collision avoidance systems that provide visual warnings and apply braking force when needed.
Its headlights with washers ensure clear visibility in mud, dirt, or snow, while the flat clamshell bonnet enhances driver control and awareness of surroundings.
Safety Features: Staying Secure on Irish Roads
When it comes to safety, the Suzuki Jimny is equipped to give drivers real peace of mind on Ireland’s unpredictable roads. Suzuki Safety Support is at the heart of the Jimny’s protective features, offering advanced technologies designed to help you avoid trouble before it starts. The Dual Sensor Brake Support (DSBS) system constantly monitors the road ahead, detecting potential collision risks and providing both audio and visual warnings if danger is detected. If you don’t react in time, the system can automatically apply increased braking force or even bring the vehicle to a stop, helping to reduce the risk of an accident.
Navigating Ireland’s winding country lanes or tackling steep slopes in wet weather, the Jimny’s lane departure warning and weaving alert systems keep you on track, gently alerting you if you begin to drift out of your lane. High beam assist is another clever feature, automatically switching between high and low beams to ensure you have the best possible visibility without dazzling other drivers—a real bonus on dark rural roads.
Whether you’re facing slippery surfaces after a rainstorm or negotiating busy city streets, these safety features work together to support you and your passengers every step of the way. With the Jimny, Suzuki has created a vehicle that’s not just fun to drive, but also equipped to keep you secure, whatever the Irish roads throw at you.

Fuel Economy and Running Costs in Ireland
Fuel economy is always part of the conversation.
The Jimny typically delivers 7–8L/100km in mixed driving, depending on your routes and driving style. It has a fuel efficiency rating of approximately 36.7 mpg on the WLTP eco cycle, which helps keep fuel cost manageable.
Because it’s a small petrol engine, maintenance is straightforward. In our experience, owners find servicing simple and affordable, with maintenance costs typically low due to the Jimny's simple mechanical design and reputation for reliability.
Running costs also depend on Irish requirements like:
Motor tax bands
NCT testing
insurance category
If you’re new to importing or registering vehicles, you’ll also want to understand Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) rules set by Revenue Commissioners.
We handle this entire process for our customers when importing Jimnys.
The Reality of Daily Comfort
Let’s be honest: the Jimny isn’t designed to be a luxury SUV.
It’s simple, rugged, and intentionally minimal.
The ride quality can feel bouncy or rough due to its off-road suspension setup, and the 3-door model has virtually no boot space when the rear seats are in use, so you’ll need to carefully pack your belongings for daily use or trips.
But for daily driving, most owners quickly adapt. The upright seating position is comfortable, visibility is excellent, and newer imported models often include:
touchscreen infotainment
reversing camera
heated seats
Apple CarPlay
The Jimny’s interior is designed to minimize distractions, helping drivers focus on the road. It also features a durable steering wheel and practical controls designed for quick and easy operation, even when wearing gloves.
For commuting around Dublin or short motorway runs, it’s more comfortable than many people expect.
Suspension and Transmission: How the Jimny Handles Ireland’s Terrain
The Suzuki Jimny’s reputation for tackling tough terrain isn’t just marketing—it’s built into every part of the vehicle. Underneath, the Jimny features a robust ladder frame that provides a solid foundation for serious off roading and everyday driving alike. Its 3-link rigid axle suspension with coil springs is designed to absorb bumps and keep all four wheels firmly planted, whether you’re bouncing over potholes in the city or exploring muddy tracks in the countryside.
What really sets the Jimny apart is its part-time 4WD system with low range transfer gear, known as ALLGRIP PRO. This setup lets you switch between 2WD for efficient road driving and 4WD with low range for maximum torque and traction when the going gets tough. Whether you’re climbing steep hills, crossing slippery fields, or navigating rocky paths, the Jimny’s transmission and suspension work together to keep you in control.
Thanks to its impressive ground clearance and carefully engineered approach, ramp breakover, and departure angles, the Jimny can handle obstacles that would stop many other vehicles in their tracks. It’s a true go-anywhere Suzuki model, equipped to take on Ireland’s rugged landscape with confidence—making every journey, on or off the road, an adventure.
Importing a Jimny to Ireland: What You Need to Know
Because the Jimny's availability in Europe was affected by emissions regulations, it was reclassified as a commercial vehicle (van) in 2021, leading to the suspension of sales in many European countries. All brand-new Suzuki Jimny models have been sold out and there is no stock remaining. In the UK, the Jimny saw strong initial sales figures during its first year on sale, but regulatory challenges and its reclassification have resulted in limited availability. As a result, lightly used Suzuki Jimnys continue to pack the classifieds with a healthy mark-up on their RRP due to their rarity. Buyers can purchase Approved Used Suzuki Jimny cars with confidence, as they have passed strict quality checks and come with a Used Car Promise. Because the Jimny is limited in the European market and classified as a commercial vehicle (van) to meet emission standards, many Irish drivers choose to import one from Japan.
That’s where The Jimny Co comes in.
We manage the entire process:
sourcing the right Jimny in Japan, including the latest new Jimny models
independent inspection and auction checks
shipping to Ireland
VRT processing and registration
warranty and preparation
In our experience, Japanese imports are often better spec’d and extremely well equipped, making them a fantastic option for Irish buyers.
Accessories That Make Daily Jimny Life Even Better
One of the best things about Jimny ownership is customisation.
Many of our customers add accessories to make their Jimny more practical for everyday use.
Popular upgrades include:
roof racks and storage systems
all-terrain tyres for Irish conditions
upgraded suspension for better handling on steep slopes
tow bars for bikes or trailers
The Jimny has a loyal customer base, with many buyers drawn to its unique design and impressive off-road capabilities.
And of course, the Jimny’s off-road capability means weekends can easily turn into adventures along the Wild Atlantic Way or Wicklow trails.
We encourage Jimny owners to share their photos of customised vehicles and memorable adventures—your photos and stories help inspire our community!

What Owners Tell Us After Living With One
After importing hundreds of Jimnys for Irish drivers, we hear similar feedback again and again.
Owners love the fact that the Jimny:
feels different from every other SUV
handles Irish roads effortlessly
turns every drive into something more enjoyable
Drivers consistently mention the Jimny's fun and engaging handling, making it enjoyable to drive in a variety of conditions. Its unique combination of cuteness and toughness gives it broad appeal, attracting everyone from city drivers to outdoor enthusiasts. The Jimny stands out as a 'proper' 4x4 with rugged hardware, unlike most similarly sized SUVs which are soft-roaders. Its brand identity is reinforced by the distinctive 'mini G-Wagon' look and mechanical simplicity, making it a standout in the Suzuki brand range.
It’s not trying to be the biggest or most luxurious vehicle on the road. However, it's important to note the Jimny's high center of gravity, which can affect stability in emergency maneuvers. Compared to dedicated off-roaders like the Jeep Wrangler, the Jimny is cheaper and more agile, though it offers less power. Against subcompact crossovers, it delivers vastly superior off-road capability but with less refined road manners.
Instead, it’s honest, capable, and full of character.
