Why Auction Grade Matters More Than Mileage
25th Dec. 2025 5 minute read

When importing a Suzuki Jimny from Japan, mileage is usually the first thing Irish buyers ask about. It’s understandable. We’ve all been trained to look at kilometres as a measure of wear.
But in our experience at The Jimny Co, auction grade tells you far more about a vehicle’s true condition than mileage ever will.
Especially on Irish roads, in Irish weather, and under NCT scrutiny, auction grade is the detail that really matters.
What Is a Japanese Auction Grade?
Japanese car auctions operate through strict auction houses where every vehicle is independently inspected by experienced auction inspectors. Each Suzuki Jimny is given an overall auction grade, usually ranging from 0 to 5, plus interior and exterior grades that reflect the vehicle’s condition in broad categories covering body panels, paint quality, corrosion, interior features, and mechanical health.
This grading system is designed to give international buyers a clear snapshot of a vehicle’s history and overall quality without needing to inspect it physically. The auction inspector’s assessment includes:
Overall body condition
Paint quality and corrosion
Interior condition, including wear and cigarette burns
Mechanical issues and service history
Accident or repair history, including any accident repairs or single panel replaced due to minor parking dings
Mileage is just one small part of that comprehensive assessment. A high-grade Jimny with higher mileage often outperforms a low-mileage vehicle with a poor grade because the auction grade reflects how well the vehicle has been maintained and cared for.
Understanding the Grading Scale
The grades range broadly from brand new car condition (S or 6), indicating only delivery mileage or minimal mileage, to poor condition grades (1 or 0) that indicate significant repairs, heavy modifications, or fire extinguisher damage.
Here’s a brief overview of the grading scale:
Grade S / 6: Pristine, brand new car or one with just delivery mileage.
Grade 5: A solid vehicle with low mileage and minimal scratches or paint blemishes.
Grade 4.5: Well-maintained with minor scratches and signs of use.
Grade 4: Average condition with visible scratches, minor dents, and some wear.
Grade 3.5: Noticeable wear, some repairs needed, possible corrosion.
Grade 3 and below: Rough vehicle, significant wear, mechanical issues, or accident repairs.
Grade 1 or 0: Very poor condition, heavily modified vehicle, or vehicles with major damage.
Why Mileage Can Be Misleading
Low mileage looks great on paper but doesn’t tell the full story. We often see:
Low-mileage Jimnys with rust from coastal storage in Japan
Vehicles that sat unused for long periods, leading to seals drying out and mechanical issues
Cosmetic damage or poor repairs that never show up in mileage figures
Meanwhile, a higher-mileage Jimny that’s been properly serviced and well maintained can be
tighter, cleaner, and better suited to Irish use. The auction inspection reports and grading system help highlight these differences.
Interior and Exterior Grades
Apart from the overall auction grade, auction sheets provide separate interior grades and exterior grades. The interior grade reflects the car’s interior condition, including upholstery wear, cigarette burns, and general cleanliness, while the exterior grade indicates the vehicle’s exterior condition, including minor scratches, dents, paint quality, and rust.
Understanding these grades helps buyers assess the vehicle’s true condition beyond just mileage and overall grade.
Why Auction Grade Matters on Irish Roads
Irish driving conditions are tough on vehicles. Damp winters, gritted roads, and strict NCT and VRT inspections mean a Jimny needs to be structurally sound and corrosion-free.
A strong auction grade gives confidence that:
The chassis and body panels are clean and free from poor repairs
Suspension and drivetrain haven’t been abused
The vehicle’s history is transparent, with no hidden accident repairs or significant damage
This matters whether you’re commuting around Dublin or heading off-road in Wicklow.
Auction Grade vs NCT & VRT
Auction grade has a direct impact on how smoothly the import process goes. Higher-grade vehicles:
Register more cleanly with fewer complications
Avoid unexpected VRT additional costs
Are less likely to need remedial work before passing the NCT
We handle VRT, registration, and compliance for every Jimny we import, but starting with the right vehicle makes all the difference.
The Bidding Process and Additional Costs
When buying at Japanese car auctions, the bidding process is fast and competitive. Auction houses provide detailed auction inspection reports, but buyers must be prepared with thorough preparation and knowledge of the grading system.
Additional costs such as auction fees, shipping, import duties, and compliance modifications should be factored into your budget alongside the auction price.
Our Approach at The Jimny Co
We prioritize auction grade first, mileage second. Our process includes:
Sourcing only reputable Japanese auction vehicles
Full auction sheet analysis and translation
Independent inspections before purchase
Handling shipping, customs, VRT, registration, and warranty end-to-end
We don’t chase cheap, low-grade stock. We chase Jimnys that will last on Irish roads.
Ownership, Accessories & Real-World Use
A well-graded Jimny is a better base for:
Off-road upgrades
All-terrain tyres
Suspension kits
Daily driving reliability
Higher-grade imports tend to age better, hold resale value stronger, and cause fewer surprises long-term.
The Bottom Line for Irish Buyers
Mileage tells you how far a Jimny has travelled. Auction grade tells you how well it’s been treated.
If you want a Jimny that’ll handle Irish weather, pass NCTs comfortably, and stay solid for years, auction grade matters more than mileage.
